Southend Rugby Club are delighted to announce that senior Co-Captain, Matt Wagstaff, has signed a new contract extension.
Wagstaff, a product of the club, has become a consistent senior player since making his Saxons debut against Guernsey in 2018.
Having confirmed he will be staying at Warners Bridge, Wagstaff said “I’m extremely happy with my decision to resign for Southend. Last season we spent a lot of time at the top of the table, but came up short in key points in games. The experience of that has hurt the squad and we feel we have unfinished business. Personally, I want to be at the forefront leading the team to a promotion, and ultimately enjoying my rugby. I have developed great friendships both on and off the field with youth coaches, 4th team players, and all the way through the club, which is another reason for me to resign”.
On his and the senior squad’s ambitions for the 2023/24 season, Wagstaff stated “This season for the Saxons is purely focused on promotion, and I hope we can deliver”.
Director of Rugby, Josh Ward, was equally delighted to see his Co-Captain commit saying “Matt’s influence on our group is huge. He’s a pivotal figure on and off the field, his game has evolved once again this season and the exciting thing is that Matt has even more room to grow as both a player and leader”.
